Apple is reportedly planning to bring ads to Apple Maps as soon as next year, Bloomberg reported. This would allow businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and retail shops to pay for higher placement in Maps search results when users look for nearby options.

For instance, if someone searches for a product, promoted businesses could appear at the top of the results. The system is expected to function much like Apple’s existing Search Ads model in the App Store, where developers pay to have their apps featured in sponsored slots.

The report suggests that Apple wants to use AI to improve Maps’ search accuracy and overall interface. The interface could look better than what competitors like Google Maps currently offer, Bloomberg reported.

Following Apple’s wider ad expansion strategy

Bloomberg first reported in 2022 that Apple was exploring more ad placements across iOS, including apps like News, Books, and Podcasts. The company already runs ad slots in the App Store, where developers can pay for visibility in search results.

Adding Maps to that list would open a new revenue channel, especially given the app’s role in helping users discover local businesses and services. However, the report noted that Apple’s plan could draw some pushback from users who prefer Apple’s apps to remain ad-free.
