OpenAI added location sharing to ChatGPT, allowing users to share GPS data for locally relevant responses on recommendations, news, and weather. The feature is opt-in and disabled by default, available on iOS and web with Android listed as coming soon.

How Location Sharing Works

ChatGPT offers two modes. Approximate location provides a broad geographic signal, while precise location delivers address-level GPS data. Precise location data is deleted after each response is generated. Location-specific content that appears in responses, such as restaurant names or venue details, persists in chat history unless manually removed by the user.

The feature is available to all ChatGPT consumer plans. Parental controls on teen accounts can disable location sharing entirely. OpenAI confirmed the launch through its release notes rather than a public newsroom announcement.

Why Local Search Is the Target

Local queries represent the highest-intent category in search advertising. Google's local search infrastructure, including Maps, Business Profiles, and "near me" query handling, has historically been outside the reach of general-purpose AI assistants. ChatGPT can now return proximity-aware results in conversational format, entering that query category for the first time.

The scale of that entry matters. ChatGPT reaches 900 million weekly active users across its consumer plans. Even a marginal shift in how those users handle local queries, such as searching for nearby restaurants, services, or businesses through ChatGPT rather than Google, represents meaningful traffic reallocation from the highest-value segment of Google's ad inventory.

Implications for OpenAI's Advertising Business

Location data has established value in digital advertising. OpenAI set its ad CPM at $60 in February 2026, roughly three times Meta's average rate. That premium relies on the demonstrated intent of ChatGPT users. Adding location context strengthens that targeting signal. An advertiser reaching a user who has just asked ChatGPT for a nearby coffee shop or contractor is accessing a demonstrably high-intent moment.

OpenAI's ad pilot reached $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks of launch, with over 600 participating advertisers. Location-enriched targeting gives OpenAI a credible argument for maintaining premium CPMs as the platform scales. OpenAI has not confirmed whether location data is directly integrated into its current ad targeting infrastructure.

AI Platform Traffic Context

ChatGPT's share of AI platform referral traffic declined from 86.6% to 64.6% during 2025, as Gemini grew 47% monthly through Google's ecosystem integration across Chrome, Android, Gmail, and Search. SE Ranking projects Gemini could reach traffic parity with ChatGPT between June and October 2026.

Local search capability directly addresses a gap in ChatGPT's product offering that Google holds structurally: Maps integration, real-time business data, and proximity relevance signals built over decades. ChatGPT's conversational approach is a different entry point into the same user intent, rather than a direct replication of Google's local stack. With Android integration already strengthening Gemini's contextual awareness on mobile, OpenAI is moving to close the gap in the query category where intent, and therefore ad value, is highest.
