Google is updating Search to allow users to ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some search results. The change lets users continue a query without starting a new search. Follow-up questions carry over the context of the original query and move users into AI Mode, Google’s conversational search interface.

AI Overviews were previously limited to static summaries. With this update, users can expand a topic by asking additional questions within the same results page.

How follow-up questions work inside AI Overviews

In a demo shared by Google, a user starts with a normal search. An AI Overview appears at the top of the page with a short explanation. Inside that overview, the user clicks “Show more.”

This action reveals an option to ask a follow-up question. When the user submits the question, Google carries over the context of the original query and shifts the interaction into AI Mode. The follow-up keeps the original context and allows the user to focus on a specific detail without starting a new search.

Google says the feature is now available globally. The new update does not replace traditional search results. Standard links remain visible below AI Overviews, and users can still navigate Search without entering AI Mode.

Google did not say whether follow-up questions will appear for every AI Overview or how often AI Overviews will appear across different types of searches.

Google says AI Overviews are now powered by Gemini 3, which is also the new default model for AI Overviews globally.
