Google is adding new agentic features to AI Mode in Search, starting with restaurant reservations. The company says the feature lets people search across multiple reservation platforms for real-time availability. For example, instead of clicking through different sites, users can ask for a table for four at a sushi restaurant on Friday night and see a list of available options pulled directly into Search.

Users can make reservations based on preferences such as party size, date, time, location, and cuisine. AI Mode will then provide options tailored to their queries.

Google explains that this will not stop with restaurants. The plan is to extend the same capability to local services and event ticket bookings.

Personalized results for U.S. users

According to Google, in the U.S., users who opt into AI Mode through Google Labs are beginning to see search results shaped by their dining preferences. Google says the personalization is limited for now, focusing mostly on food-related recommendations. For instance, someone who often searches for coffee shops may start seeing café suggestions that align with past queries.

Expanding AI Mode capabilities

These additions build on features Google has introduced over the past few months. In July, the company brought AI Mode into Circle to Search, a tool that allows users to highlight or circle anything on their phone screen and instantly search it. AI Mode also supports voice and image queries, making it accessible beyond text-based searches.

The company’s direction suggests that AI Mode is not just a new search interface but a growing assistant within Google Search. However, Google faces stronger competition in the AI search space. ChatGPT’s Agent, available to Plus, Pro, and Team users, can book restaurant reservations, order groceries, research products, and fill out forms. Through its AI browser Comet, Perplexity users can also book restaurants. The assistant walks them through the process step by step and completes the booking.

These platforms have also introduced shopping features. Perplexity supports in-app shopping, allowing U.S. users to buy products directly within its chat interface. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has added a shopping feature as well, turning AI chats into a commerce channel.

With these new features added to AI Mode, Google is ramping up its AI search efforts to stay competitive. The company aims to maintain its share of the search market, especially as users turn to AI tools for their queries.
