Google has introduced Search Live, which allows users to interact with Search using their voice. The tool is available through the Google app on both Android and iOS.

Search Live is an experimental feature within Google’s AI Mode, which is now available to all U.S. users. The tool lets users speak their search queries and hear AI-generated answers.

How Search Labs users can use Search Live in AI Mode

Once users open the Google app, they will see a new "Live" icon just below the search bar. Tapping that icon allows them to start speaking directly to Google. After asking a question, Search Live responds with AI-generated audio answers. Users can ask follow-up questions by voice. This is similar to how people use voice assistants. They can also switch to typing.

The tool includes a transcript view, letting users read what the AI said or continue the conversation by typing if they prefer. Users can also revisit their conversation in the AI Mode history, where previous queries and AI responses are stored.

This conversational format is built on a custom version of Gemini designed for voice. According to Google, the system understands context and supports multi-turn conversations. It also works in the background, allowing users to continue the conversation while switching apps.

Search Live is similar to Gemini Live, another Google Voice AI experience, but this feature is built directly into the Google Search app instead of requiring a separate app or interface.

Availability and access of Search Live

Search Live is currently available only in the U.S. and only to users who have opted into AI Mode through Google’s Labs program. Once enabled, the new Live icon appears directly under the search bar inside the Google app.

Google plans to expand Search Live with more features

Google says it will bring more features to Search Live. According to the company, the expected capabilities include real-time camera input for visual queries. The update may allow users to use their camera while speaking, so they can show Search what they are seeing. This feature is expected "in the coming months."

Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product, has previously said the company plans to build more features into AI Mode over time. Google recently added a Lens feature, which lets users search using images.
