Microsoft has launched its Bing generative search feature similar to Google AI Overviews. This feature which was previously accessible by a limited group of users is now available to all users in the U.S.

How Bing generative search works

Bing's generative search feature combines traditional search results with advanced language models. It allows users to access relevant data more easily. When users input queries, the system generates a concise summary of these queries and adds relevant links.

The new tool uses advanced AI algorithms to understand user intent better and provide tailored responses. This means that when users enter search prompts, Bing analyzes not just the keywords, but also the context behind them.

Bing generative search works for informational queries. Users can search for "Bing generative search" in the search bar and get AI-generated summaries that compile information from various online sources. They can also choose not to receive AI-generated answers and opt for traditional search results.

Microsoft claimed this tool better understands search intent by pulling together data from millions of sources. It enables “a more profound level of answers” and “Whether you’re looking for a detailed explanation, solving a complex problem, or doing deep research, generative AI helps deliver a more profound level of answers that goes beyond surface-level results,” the company said.

Concerns about AI-generated summaries

While Microsoft explained that its AI summaries provide more reliable results, there are still concerns about the accuracy of AI summaries and how these search results might affect web traffic for publishers. For instance, studies suggest that Google’s AI Overviews could reduce publisher traffic by up to 25%, as users may find direct answers without clicking through to the original articles.

Microsoft has acknowledged this concern and has committed to monitoring how Bing generative search affects publisher traffic. However, the company has yet to provide updated data since its initial assurances in July.
