Perplexity has begun testing its AI-powered web browser, Comet, with a small group of Windows users. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed the Windows rollout in response to a question on X. “Windows build is also ready,” Srinivas wrote, adding that invites have already been sent to a group of early testers.

Android version is also underway and ahead of schedule

Srinivas also said that the Android version of Comet is already in progress. “Android build is also moving at a crazy pace and ahead of schedule,” he wrote. This suggests that a mobile version may follow soon after the Windows testing phase, potentially opening Comet to a broader audience of users and advertisers.

Perplexity first announced plans to launch Comet, its AI web browser in February. The company described Comet as an “agent browser” designed to help users explore and understand the web more efficiently.

Perplexity is pitching Comet as a tool for users who want to automate more of their web experience. It aims to compete with offerings like Google Chrome’s generative AI features, Microsoft Edge’s Copilot integration, and Opera’s newly launched AI browser, Neon.

Ad targeting and personalization raise concerns

In April, Srinivas said on a podcast that Comet would track user behavior both inside and outside the Perplexity app to deliver better-targeted ads. The idea, he explained, is to build more detailed user profiles so that ads can be better matched. This raised concerns about how much user data Perplexity plans to collect.

In response to the criticism, Srinivas said his comments were taken out of context. On X, he said that the discussion was hypothetical and intended to explain how memory and personalization might support relevant advertising. According to Srinivas, users will always have the option to opt out of personalization and ads entirely.

No public launch yet, but a waitlist is open

Comet is not yet publicly available for download. The company is still offering a waitlist for users interested in testing the AI-powered browser. However, in a post on X earlier this month, Srinivas hinted at an upcoming release.
