Shopify has opened its product catalog and Shop Pay checkout to any AI agent that can connect to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, through a new hosted service called Shop MCP. An agent connected to it can search more than 1 billion products, build a cart and, for a shopper who has signed in, finish the purchase without sending them to the store’s website.

Shopify explains the move in its developer changelog. Until now, an agent could find a product in Shopify Catalog but had to send the shopper to the store’s site to pay, which the company says “often caused drop-off”. With Shop MCP, the payment happens inside the agent.

How Shop MCP Works

One connection gives an agent 17 tools. They cover catalog search and product details, carts, checkout and order tracking. Search needs no API key at all. Developers who want higher rate limits can create one in Shopify’s Dev Dashboard. Shopify’s documentation for agents sets out what a shopper’s stated requirements become in that search: filters for price, size, colour and target gender, a delivery destination and a named set of stores, with unavailable items excluded by default.

Carts and checkout also work without an account. In that case the agent hands the shopper a link to the merchant’s own checkout page to pay. Signing in with a Shop account changes what the agent can do. Search results can draw on the shopper’s saved sizes and preferences, checkout can use their saved addresses and Shop Pay, and the agent can complete the order itself once the shopper has confirmed the total and the payment method.

According to the Shop MCP documentation, each checkout belongs to a single merchant, so a basket drawn from three stores becomes three separate checkouts. Shopify names Claude and ChatGPT as MCP clients that run the Shop sign-in for the shopper.

Payment Reaches Stores Outside Shopify

Shop MCP does not stop at Shopify’s own merchants. When a product comes from a store that does not run on Shopify, the shopper approves the purchase in Shop, and the agent receives single-use card details to pay on that store’s own checkout.

That puts Shop in the payment path for stores that are not Shopify merchants, as well as for the ones that are.

Two Routes for Agents in Three Weeks

Shop MCP is Shopify’s second checkout release for AI agents in under three weeks. On 28 September, according to TechCrunch, Shopify added WebMCP checkout tools for agents working inside the shopper’s own browser. Those tools read and update the live checkout page. Shop MCP serves the opposite case, an agent that never opens a browser at all.

Where the agent works
Inside the shopper’s own browser, on the store’s checkout page.
On a server, with no browser and no store page open.
Who it serves
Browser agents shopping a Shopify store.
Any agent or app that connects to Shopify’s hosted MCP server.
How the purchase completes
The agent submits the checkout after the buyer confirms, and hands back control for steps such as 3D Secure.
A signed-in shopper confirms the total and payment method, then the agent completes it with Shop Pay.
Merchant setup
None. Shopify says the tools need no merchant configuration.

Both routes share a standard. Shop MCP’s documentation says its catalog, cart and checkout data follow the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open checkout standard at the centre of the race over AI checkout. TechCrunch reports that the WebMCP tools rest on UCP too.

The release also generalises a deal Shopify made for one agent. On 21 September, Shopify chief executive Tobias Lütke announced that Meta’s Muse agent would be able to buy from Shopify stores using Shop Pay. Shop MCP offers the same checkout to any agent that connects, with no partnership required.

What Merchants Have Not Been Told

The changelog is written for developers building agents, not for the merchants whose products those agents will sell. It says orders placed through an agent appear in the merchant’s Shopify admin like any other order. There are no webhooks at launch, so developers have to check each checkout’s status themselves.

A purchase the agent completes never loads the store’s website. It reaches the merchant as an order in the admin, not as a visit that site analytics or an ad pixel can see.

It says nothing about a merchant fee or a way to opt out. Shopify’s help pages for merchants explain how to remove Catalog access for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot specifically, but they do not mention Shop MCP. Eligible products reach AI channels through Shopify Catalog automatically.

Cost is the question merchants will ask first. In January, The Information reported that Shopify merchants would pay OpenAI a 4% fee on ChatGPT checkout sales. Shopify has not said whether a sale completed through Shop MCP carries any charge beyond standard payment processing.

Amazon has taken the opposite approach. It has blocked Meta’s Muse agent from its store, while Shopify is opening its merchants’ catalogs to any agent that asks.
