X has launched React with Video, a new feature that lets users record a video response to any post directly from the repost menu. X Head of Product Nikita Bier announced React with Video in a post on the app yesterday.

The update adds a video-based alternative to traditional reposts and quote posts, giving users another way to comment on content without leaving the conversation thread.

The new feature is currently available on iOS. The company has not given a specific date for an Android or web release. However, a broader rollout across platforms is expected in the coming weeks.

How React With Video Works Inside the Repost Flow

React with Video sits inside the existing repost flow. Tapping the repost button on any post now surfaces React with Video as a third recording option alongside Repost and Quote. The new format does not replace either of the existing options.

Once selected, users can record a video response using three layouts. They can use green screen, split screen, or picture-in-picture formats. Each of these formats is designed around layering the original post with the user’s reaction, which keeps the original content visible while adding commentary on top.

Bier described commentary as "one of the most important pillars of X." He framed the format as a video-native alternative to a quote post. X has not detailed a paid component or creator-monetisation hook attached at the iOS launch.

A Second Swing at Video Replies

This is not the first time the company has tried a video reply format. Back in 2022, then-Twitter launched Tweet Takes, a TikTok-style video response feature. That earlier version did not gain significant traction and was eventually deprioritised.

React with Video is effectively a second attempt at the same product bet, this time under Bier's product leadership and built directly into the repost surface where commentary on X already concentrates.

The broader market has also already moved in this direction. Platforms like TikTok introduced Stitch and Duet years ago, allowing users to build video responses directly on top of other videos. Instagram supports video replies in comments, and YouTube Shorts also uses reaction-style templates.

The competitive baseline is already established. The difference this time is that X is not building a separate video feed or standalone format. The platform is embedding video replies into repost behaviour, which is already a core engagement path on the platform.
