Yelp is licensing its trove of local reviews, ratings, and photos to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT a real-time source of business recommendations. The non-exclusive agreement lets ChatGPT pull Yelp content directly into answers when users ask about restaurants, shops, or local services, with Yelp branding and links attached to the listings it supplies. OpenAI controls how that information is presented.

For Yelp, the arrangement extends a distribution strategy it already runs with Apple Maps and Yahoo, where it supplies the business data other platforms display. Placing that same content inside a chatbot treats generative AI as another surface for reach rather than a competitor to wall its data off from. Financial terms were not disclosed, and Yelp says the deal does not prevent it from striking similar agreements with other AI companies.

What Changes for Local Businesses

As AI assistants take on more everyday queries, the moment a consumer discovers a local business is shifting away from Yelp's own app and toward however a chatbot summarizes and ranks options. With ChatGPT, the most-used AI chatbot in the U.S. as of June, that presentation increasingly determines which businesses get seen. A restaurant or plumber that once managed its reputation through a Yelp profile now depends on how OpenAI surfaces that profile inside a conversation it does not control.

A Bet on Distribution Over Control

Yelp's calculation is that broad exposure reinforces its brand even when the presentation sits with someone else. Yelp says value still accrues to the company when its content travels beyond its own app and reaches consumers in useful ways. The move contrasts with publishers that have sued OpenAI to keep their data out of its models, and it mirrors Reddit, which licensed its content to the company rather than fight it. Yelp has reason for caution. It previously licensed content to Google, a relationship that soured into a continuing antitrust dispute over how Google handles local results.

Why It Matters for Marketers

For brands and local marketers, the deal signals that reputation management is expanding beyond maintaining a Yelp page to understanding how third-party data feeds shape AI answers. As generative engines pull from licensed sources, visibility depends less on a business's own profile and more on which data partnerships an assistant strikes. Yelp's "Request a Quote" integration, expected soon, would also route service-provider leads directly through ChatGPT, adding a channel marketers will need to account for.
