Google is inviting US retailers into a beta that puts Business Agent, its conversational shopping assistant, inside YouTube ads. Viewers can ask detailed product questions and get tailored guidance without leaving YouTube.

Google announced the beta on 16 September in a holiday shopping update. Retailers join through a sign-up form, and Google says the agent is embedded in their YouTube ads once an eligible retailer signs up.

How Business Agent Works in YouTube Ads

Business Agent answers shopping questions on a brand’s behalf. Google introduced it in Search earlier this year, where it responds to shoppers’ questions about a retailer’s products.

Inside a YouTube ad, the agent lets a viewer research a product, ask follow-up questions and get guidance tailored to what they want, all within the ad. Google describes the aim as taking viewers “from inspired to purchase-ready.”

The beta is limited. It is open only to retailers in the US and only through sign-up, and Google has not published pricing or a date for wider availability.

Google’s sign-up form, linked from the announcement, sets the criteria: an active Demand Gen campaign linked to a Merchant Center feed spending at least $10 a day, US and English only, on mobile in-stream inventory with no Shorts, enrolled by MCC ID across every eligible campaign under it unless specific customer or campaign IDs are listed.

The Same Idea as ChatGPT’s Sponsored Agents

Google is not the only platform testing ads that talk back. On 20 September The Keyword reported that ChatGPT is testing ads that open a brand agent chat, a labeled conversation with an agent representing the advertiser, in a limited alpha with selected US advertisers.

Two of the largest ad platforms are now testing the same format in the same month: an ad that opens a conversation with the brand instead of sending the viewer to a landing page. YouTube brings scale in video, which Google says shoppers use for research and discovery, while ChatGPT brings users who arrive with a question already formed.

The two tests differ in where the conversation starts. ChatGPT’s sponsored agent sits inside a chat product, where the user is already typing. On YouTube the viewer is watching a video and has to choose to start a conversation, so the ad has to earn that step before the agent can do any work.

What Changes for Advertisers

An ad that answers questions shifts the preparation. The creative still has to hold attention, but the agent behind it needs accurate product details, prices and policies, because a viewer’s follow-up question is answered from that information rather than from the video.

It also changes the path to purchase. Google has been bringing checkout into YouTube, including UCP checkout in YouTube Shopping ads in May. An agent inside the ad covers the step between watching and buying, the research that used to happen on a retailer’s own site.

That leaves the retailer’s site with less of the conversation. Questions about sizing, compatibility or delivery that once brought a shopper to a product page can now be answered in the ad, which means the product information a brand gives Google carries more of the sale.

Measurement is the open question. Google has not said how conversations inside ads will be reported in Google Ads, or whether they will count toward conversions, which is what most media buyers will ask about first.
