Yesterday, YouTube introduced a new feature that allows creators to decide if third-party companies can use their videos to train AI models. The company announced that this opt-in feature will be available in YouTube Studio under “Third-party training.” 

The update is rolling out over the next few days, and creators globally will receive notifications on desktop and mobile.

How it works

Creators with access to YouTube Studio’s Content Manager can opt in or out of this feature anytime. Videos must be authorized by the creator and any applicable rights holders, such as those managing detected Content ID material. Unauthorized scraping of content for AI training will remain prohibited, YouTube said.

TechCrunch reports that the initial list of participating companies includes OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Meta, Nvidia, and Apple. Other companies include Anthropic, Stability AI, and ByteDance, among others.

A response to growing AI scraping concerns

This feature follows concerns about content scraping major tech companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic. The video platform first said in September that it was exploring ways to give creators more choice over how third parties use their YouTube content.
